GIZ · Job ID 8
Energy Solutions for Displacement Settings (ESDS) is a global project, funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). It seeks to improve the energy supply in refugee camps and settlements in Uganda, Kenya and Ethiopia. By providing advisory services to UNHCR, the project supports the implementation of the Comprehensive Refugee Response Framework (CRRF) of the United Nations. The framework seeks to stabilize host communities and strengthen the self-reliance of refugees by pursuing an approach that ensures to benefit both refugee and host communities. In Uganda, ESDS develops and implements renewable high-tier energy solutions in displacement settings, among others for the (UNHCR-)camp infrastructure. The project guides the implementation of energy assessments in its project sites. It also develops proposals for solar hybrid solutions and business models for the outsourcing of electricity supply (“energy-as-a-service models) that are attractive to the private sector (component 1). Furthermore, it seeks to improve the access to renewable energies on a household level, both for refugees and host communities. This is realized through the promotion of solar kiosks through market-based approaches (component 2). On a policy level, ESDS works together with governmental stakeholders in the implementation of the CRRF into local energy sector programs (component 3). GIZ is recruiting a technical expert with excellent knowledge of the renewable energy sector, especially in the field of decentralized solar energy.
